Or what are your best alternatives? Yes, it is a marketing-focused tool, but a few BI tool features wouldn't hurt, regardless of Looker. Maybe a Data Studio person will stumble upon this post for inspiration. But fair enough, more fancy than mission critical. This is a nice feature in PowerBI if you perform exploration in notebooks and Google Cloud is advanced in notebook workflows. Lack of Python □ / R visualisation support. This can create dozens of copies of the same data source, each with different undocumented extra logic. There is no differentiated permissions concept beyond reading and editing. ![]() Everybody can connect Google Analytics to Data Studio and build reports, add custom fields, and that is a problem. There are Youtube tutorials showing how to set the report page width to 300px, but come on Google, you can do better. I use the GA app every day, but Data Studio only on Desktop. PowerBI has a responsive layout rendering option, which Data Studio still lacks in a mobile first world. My Christmas wish: what if Google sent an event to BigQuery or the Analytics integration every time a broken widget was shown? It would teach dashboard owners to treat data as a product. Exposed data sources and widgets can't be monitored through metadata. If a column name changes in an exposed table, reports will break. I am a proponent of the principle that data modeling and logic should happen in the transformation layer, not in a BI tool. Lightdash is considered the new David against the Goliaths like Looker, Tableau and PBI. This is where Lightdash really shines, as it is natively built on top of dbt Labs. No metadata is displayable in the dashboard layer, be it table or column descriptions, ownership or lineage between models. It is easy to connect BigQuery to Data Studio, but it ends there. Here are the features that I'm currently missing: These are not so much visualisations, more a poor management layer that creates chaos when you scale: Data Studio is simply not a BI tool (yet). However, we've been hitting more restrictions in our analytics work, thus I wanted to share a few. At Bergzeit, we use it as our main dashboarding tool besides #PowerBI. ![]() The logic layer with custom fields is easy to use, the BigQuery BI Engine is incredible for fast loading ⚡ of large datasets and the new organizational sharing □ option (via Cloud Indentity) is a huge win for better governance.
